In Palma Nova there is a very long promenade which is dragging on over three beaches.
Good floor plates, the wheelchair is rolling and rolling and rolling…

On two of these three beaches there is a special roofed

beach area for handicapped like me and …ehhh… babies…

There is a

beach wheelchair

on each in which you get transferred from your own wheelchair by two nice helpers from the Spanish Red Cross and pulled across the beach into the water.

I knew these special wheelchairs already from Tenerife see older blogpost, but with a water temperature of 15°C I deferred a test series of these models for an indefinite time.

If you are only allowed to use this beach area as wheelchair user when you have got a baby with you???

The bungalow complex Nautilus in Lanzarote

is extraordinary. I haven’t seen anything like this before. You are living there a bit like in the Frankfurtian Museum of Modern Art, I will write a particular blog about it some time.

It begins with the fact that the trails for wheelers are bare of potholes and painted in stylish swimming pool blue. The only ramp which is a bit steeper was lately defused to a

Spanish 6 Degrees – Ramp

Additionally there are rest areas set up for „tired warriors“.

The classic mediterranian flair with down falling plaster, clamping doors, blank cables, wiggly door handles, busted sockets and washbasins you miss immediately (not really).

Also the 500 g of hair in the sink will hardly be found. Thus the holiday feeling slowly starts.

44 bungalows are set up wheelchair accessible, and it is to mention that the grab handles next to the toilet are better fixed than on some stands of a rehab fair. The type of the

Raised Toilet Seat

is designed very individually and is even new to me, but it seems to be functional. Even a

Makeup Mirror

was kept in mind, which is optimally suitable for a wheeler to shave himself. Curiously it is the same type I introduced in my blog on June, 10th 2010. Seems that somebody has read my article. (see older blog post).

In newer bungalows some floor cupboards in the kitchen were saved maybe because of a lack of money. This results in the negative effect, that you as wheelchair driving man can reach the stove and will therefore sometimes be compelled to kitchen duty during the holidays by your partner.

The approximately 32 inch flatscreen TV is secured by an alarm system and definitely too big for the hand luggage on the return flight.

In this complex anything time-tested is different. In front of every bungalow you will find two sunbeds on a little terrace, and you will find plenty of them around the pool. So you are cheated out of the sporting competition on holiday to place your black-red-gold coloured towel on a sunbed at 03:30 o’clock in the early morning before any English could do so, just to claim your territory.

For us four-wheelers there is a

Poollifter, operated by water pressure

available which firstly reminds of a bottling plant of a brewery, but with a little practice the usage is fine.

On December 17th (see older blogpost) I had my snow inauguration at the same place.

Now, 4 weeks later, my beloved snow has changed its state of aggregation from solid to liquid.

So you are thinking about for weeks how you can move through the snow in a wheelchair and have completely disregarded the swimming capabilities of these things.

On December 17th (see older blogpost) I had my snow inauguration at the same place.

Now, 4 weeks later, my beloved snow has changed its state of aggregation from solid to liquid.

So you are thinking about for weeks how you can move through the snow in a wheelchair and have completely disregarded the swimming capabilities of these things.

I already mentioned the accessibility of Los Cristianos. They have equipped a special area for us wheelchair and scooter users on the beach over there.

You can drive in your wheelchair on wooden planks almost into the water.

If you really would like to go into the sea there are two wheelchair lifeguards who lift you with a hoist into a

Beach Wheelchair

and move you across the sand into the sea.

The guys have pushed me across the beach at a run. I was shocked that Spaniards can move that fast, respect.

Swimming in the sea for the first time after 3,5 years, what a feeling!

I was hardly in the water, and the big fish die-off began.

A visit to the swimming pool in my case turns out to be a little bit like the launch of a

Containership.

There are the most different methods to be

„watered“

Possibilities are e.g. a hydraulically swinging bench, a chair in which one is wound down to the water, or a shower chair in which one is pushed down a ramp into the wet as at a ship’s christening.
Into the sea one is pushed e.g. with a beach wheelchair.
(see older blog post).

The strangest variant reminds immediately of the good old

Chairoplane

on a fun fair. The fun begins with this

floating chair

being 10 cm higher than my cushion, and I would have had to unpack little wings to get on it on my own. Presumably for hygienic reasons the footrest was installed towards the inner side of the chair so that not everybody puts his unwashed feet on it.
If the jump on this thing was successful you swing the safety bar around. The copilot (assistant) drives you to the starting position in front of the pool, hooks you up with two belts into the hoist mounted on the ceiling, and the flight above the water may start.

Before watering put on your life vest!

Exercise of all kind is in spite of the paralysis extremely important. My daily morning 1 – 1,5 hours of

wheeler yoga in bed

are showing the first results. Additionally a bit

leg training,

Swimming Pool,

Hand cycle,

Physio therapy (see older blogpost)

and I am ready for the next

Paralympics.

I am not sure about the discipline, any ideas?
I only get tired quickly!
