“Die Maus”

(translator’s note: The Mouse, a popular character from German kids TV) escorts me since 2,5 years, already at the time when I was still in hospital, back on my rucksack, in my wheelchair life.

Meanwhile I also have the Mouse as figurehead and a Mouse-toolkit on my hand cycle.

Two people from the Aids foundation have pinned an Aids ribbon on it a couple of weeks ago.

My wife has even baked Mouse muffins and Mouse cakes for me.

The Mouse can witness everything what I have experienced.

It will be 40 years this year.

Because I am also facing the 40 and even Wiki couldn’t reveal to me who is older I went to the homepage and have asked the Mouse itself.

The editorial office has sent a very nice e-mail to me.

According to my opinion the exact age of the Mouse should not be concealed.

Extract from this e-mail:
Because the Mouse has entered the world already on March 7th 1971 while you have set foot on this planet as new arrival only 6 months later, the Mouse is clearly the older one.

Of course I had to report this to you.

I am asking to put the date in your calendars and wish the Mouse a happy birthday on March 7th.

Simply Great Part IV

What you need as wheelchair user is the patience of others, everything is “going” a little slower, and much space, always and everywhere.

Everybody who already stood in a changing room of a department store knows how “big” these rooms are.

Such a changing room in general is wheelchair friendly.
You can access it without barriers and it doesn’t have doors either.

Ok, you can’t turn around either, the coat hooks are mounted a little too high, stool or bench are standing in your way, but apart from that it’s quite cozy inside.

Although it is hardly possible to try on clothes inside, it is perfectly suitable for a little nap.

Actually somebody from a large green department store chain has given some thoughts and has built a

Wheelchair Changing Room

in Frankfurt. I don’t know if it is the only one.
The description

extra large

is not overstated.

Great thing!!!

The space in this room is so gigantic that you almost need a GPS to find the exit again.

On December 17th (see older blogpost) I had my snow inauguration at the same place.

Now, 4 weeks later, my beloved snow has changed its state of aggregation from solid to liquid.

So you are thinking about for weeks how you can move through the snow in a wheelchair and have completely disregarded the swimming capabilities of these things.

Frankfurt on/in the Main

The vaults of the bank get flooded!

Good that I have an

amphibian wheelchair

Hard to believe, but I am standing with my wheelchair virtually in the river.

I might seem to be a notorious complainer sometimes, but some companies get away with stuff that’s a bit too cheeky.
The photos were made on 05.10.2010.

Tested “good” by the German product test foundation in 4/2006!
When the DVDs were tested I was still pedestrian.

Also this year, my neighbour has planted flowers at my

Simply brilliant, thanks from this side, looks great.

The floridity meanwhile turns into a jungle-like status.
It‘s growing and growing!

Another two weeks, and I need a machete when I want to leave the house.

I was training this situation already in the botanical garden in Frankfurt.

Signs Part III

Although I am in possession of a valid driving licence for a car adapted with hand throttle (see older blogpost), I have never made a

wheeler driving test,

otherwise I would know this

floor labeling in connection with a parking restriction sign

in the middle of the street for sure.

“except ambulance vehicles”
I don’t understand it.

It is not a labeled disabled parking place.

Could it be the parking position for an ambulance vehicle driven by a wheelchair user?

Is a wheelchair a vehicle for the sick?

Help me, I’m confused…

50 cc Motor Wheelchair: Simson DUO 4/1

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Frontpage

Before my accident 2001 my hobby was the restoration of old mopeds of the former GDR (German Democratic Republic).

Amongst other things I still own a hand throttle operated

Handicap vehicle type:

Simson/Brandis Duo 4/1, year of construction 1982.

I have rebuilt the DUO a “bit” to West German standard.
The vehicle has a 50 cc engine and makes officially 50 km/h.

As you can see there are no pedals. Gears are changed with the left arm without clutch, with the right arm the handle bar is pushed for gas, and when brake is needed the whole handle bar is pushed forward.

With the Duo I drove after almost 4 years of restoration (1024 working hours) with my wife to the town hall in Frankfurt to get married.

I am still hoping that my strength and upper body stability will increase some time in that way that I can take a ride again.

If somebody needs technical support with Simson mopeds or spare parts, I still have around 600 kg.

Officially the DUO is a vehicle for handicapped .

The most odd stories happen to us wheelers.
Here is a great story from… let’s call her Maria:

Yesterday at the groceries:

In our shopping center there is a big supermarket,
nice staff, very helpful.
Regularly trainees at the counter who are asking
if they may pack your groceries.

I am rolling through the cashier with a

big water melon

(I could live on these tasty things, yummy!)
and a

zucchini.

I pay, everything alright.

Then the question of the ca. 18-year-old trainee:

“Are you OK, or shall I pop it in for you?”

I am looking at the melon and the zucchini and alternately at him…
…laughed myself into stitches… and answer:

“Neither one nor the other, thanks.”

But you may pack the melon and the zucchini into the net behind my back.

With such friendly staff you are happy to come back!
