Everybody who lives in the city and has moved houses once knows about the big difficulty where to park the moving truck???
Normal car parking places are scarce anyway.
The blocking of perceived parking places with chairs and trash cans is rarely working.
Somebody could use the chairs, and for a parking place in the city center even a Yuppie with an Audi TT will push a trash can aside.
In Frankfurt we have a service where you inform the city when you would like to move.
The city then places official parking prohibition signs so that the moving truck has a suitable parking place.
I assume that illegally parking cars will be towed away.
So you have at least a real chance for a parking place on your moving day!!!
The guys who have set up this sign should be tied to the sign and “showered” with old vegetables!

One of the main issues for us wheelers is the question, where is the next disabled toilet.
As pedestrian it is hardly imaginable that trips into the wild have to be planned from loo to loo.
For many wheelers the question of the next toilet is rather the biggest handicap, and many don’t dare to leave home for this reason!!!

I know my hometown Frankfurt very well, but I would never have thought that there are so many disabled toilets in the city center.

Because this app or website is interactive as well you can also comment on the disabled toilets, if e.g. there is a narrow door, or add not known disabled toilets.
The option to display disabled parking places exists, but there have to be added some 1000 existing parking places.

After the broadcasting marathon of the TV stations at the Olympic Games I am a bit disappointed that no live sport from the Paralympics is broadcasted in the evening programme.
Yesterday evening at wheelchair basketball there was right in the opening match of the group stage a new edition of the European championship final
No German TV station has broadcasted the match, it’s a shame!!!
On the official website of the Paralympics http://www.paralympic.org there are several live streams in English and Spanish available with the various disciplines.
It was working for me only after installing the Plugin “octoshape streaming service” and “Adobe Flash Player 11.4″.
I had then connected my laptop with a HDMI cable to my TV and watched the match!!!

Today is the start of the

on TV. It is unbelievable how fast one can move in a wheelchair!!!
In February 2012, when I was in Tenerife in the wheelchair hotel “Mar y Sol”, the Swedish national team was training for wheelchair rugby, (see older blogpost with video).
I tried myself in wheelchair hockey, “Sport News II”.
During the opening ceremony I even recognized a Swedish player.

In Mallorca there is an organization FUNDACIĂ“N HANDISPORT
With them a wheelchair user can go waterskiing, golfing and driving beach buggy, and even sailing.
I have tried it of course, it was a perfect day:

For the next Paralympics I still have to practice a bit.

Addendum to blogpost from 01. November 2011 about a self-constructed
From a fellow wheeler I have got the tip that she is using a window opener of the company
for years and is very happy with it.

I had a closer look at this part in the internet and agree with her.
For buckled fingers like me with limited finger function the handle would have to be modified a little.
I consider the price as fair, which is probably because this window opener unfortunately doesn’t have a medical device number.
If someone should manage to convince his health insurance to cover the costs for this useful technical aid please send me a short message.

Last week I have heard from my informant in Rödelheim that my favourite sign
at the train station Rödelheim in Frankfurt has been unfortunately removed after three month… sniff… 
New sign:
The new ramps still aren’t any less steep, and we hope that the lifts will always be running.
But when these are defective at least we wheelchair users are now allowed with kind approval of the city of Frankfurt and the German railway company to most officially tumble down the 10% ramp “at our own risk”.
According to the information of the commissioner for disabled of the city, a flattening of the ramps is not planned.
Allegedly, the ramps would have a floor heating!!!

There are often small things which can help to get mad a little less in spite of one’s handicap. With my buckled fingers I always have “slight” difficulties to hold a pen.
Even before my accident I already had a kind of cryptographic handwriting (dreadful scrawl), which I only could decipher myself, but now…
My “handwriting“ is quite dreadful despite occupational therapy in which I started like in first grade to draw “e” and “a”.
I always try to convince myself to see everything sportingly and stay quiet, but if it is about writing I rarely succeed.
Everybody who once had a healthy set of hands knows what I mean.
I recommend to everyone who would like to try out such a handicap to do the housekeeping for at least 1,5 hours with leather ski gloves, or just try to write an address on an envelope… with sender!
If I could really motivate somebody for this test I would appreciate to receive a test report. rollinator@eigude.de
I didn’t like pencils any more at all, these things were too smooth for me.
You might put rubber foam or rubber caps on the pencils, but it might work differently as well.
The company Staedtler is known for their writing utensils of all kind.
They are offering a
which I think is very recommendable due to its grip.
With this one you might be able to write a love letter in ski gloves.

If you are like me not bigger than 1,38 m sitting in the wheelchair and additionally are not able to grip acceptably any more the supposed most easy things become challenges.
Before my accident I was a real friend of plastic money. Insert card, add number, and yet the bucks were gone, if you are not just standing in front of an ATM.
As wheeler you feel a little uncomfortable with the debit card when each pedestrian looks over your shoulder when you are typing the PIN on the do-it-yourself store counter.
Additionally my wallet fell down regularly.
I decided rather quickly in favour of the a bit antiquated, but in Germany still widely used cash, whereas the little hitch was that I can only grip coins very poorly with my fingers and the coins fall down to the floor often. Additionally, who likes it when the casher is digging in your wallet, or who would give to the kind filling station attendant the PIN of the debit card to settle your bill.
Every quadriplegic has his mishap with zippers when the motor function of the fingers is limited. Alternatively to the well-known key rings which are usually fixed to the zippers I as former electronic technician am largely fixated on tie wraps.
On rucksack, jacket (see older blogpost), camera bag and even on the pants,… tie wraps, tie wraps, tie wraps… Thumbs in… open close, open close…!
The idea to fix the wallet with a spiral rope on the key ring at the front bag of my cushion was obvious. A wheeler friend of mine got his wallet stolen from his rucksack on the back of his wheelchair 4 weeks ago. If someone would try this with me the person would have to bend down so low that an uppercut would be recommendable.
From the technical side I don’t have difficulties with paying any more; now only the regular refilling of the wallet at the bank has to be ensured.
Quiz question: There are two tie wraps on the wallet, a white one and a black one, which one opens the pocket with the cash??? *

As born-and-bred citizen of Frankfurt I am proud of my hometown, but too much is too much!!
I have read in the internet forum Rollingplanet that a new underpass was built at the train station in Rödelheim (a district in Frankfurt Germany). Looks a bit like an amphitheater.
This underpass is such a political issue that meanwhile a citizens’ initiative has been formed. The “WutbĂĽrger” (enraged citizens) are on their way from all directions…
Amongst other things it was discovered during a job-site inspection upon almost accomplished completion of the underpass that the brand new mighty concrete ramps on both sides of the tracks have 10% gradient.
Ramps in the public area always have to be built with maximum 6% and without transversal slope according to DIN 18024-1 und DIN 18040-1 (source: barrierefrei bauen mit nullbarriere.de)
The result is that the ramps are very steep not only for wheelchair users, but also for rollator users, cyclists and people with strollers.
The city of Frankfurt has proven creativity and has hung up a prohibition sign without further ado, which prohibits the passing of the ramp for all wheelchair users.
You could use the lifts, which is basically right if it would be ensured that these lifts would always be running. I don’t know any wheelchair user who wasn’t standing at least once in front of a defective lift.
Words fail to describe the prohibition sign!
Inconceivable… How can you globally prohibit the passing of the ramps for all wheelchair users!
This sign has no other reason for the municipality except to escape responsibility from an insurance perspective if something should happen to someone.
This is just the start. From now on bad planning will be compensated with prohibition signs.
We met yesterday at the train station with unfortunately only three wheelers to have a closer look at the ramps and to duly celebrate the introduction of this new prohibition sign with a glass of sparkling wine.
Highly illegal, the ramps were passed on both sides. We came to the conclusion that a fit wheeler, somebody with an electric wheelchair, a motor-supported active wheelchair or the help of a companion can surmount the ramps.
The sign does not comply with the road traffic regulations and is mounted so high that no wheelchair user will see it anyway.
An acknowledgement letter and a few flowers were fixed to the new “favourite wheelchair user sign”.
